What are our goals?

The goals of Jammbo’laya are to ensure diversity and representation, foster understanding, and encourage exploration of the world as it truly is, through music.

Exploration

To offer Black and underserved youth opportunities to explore the world through music developed by black composers and musicians from the African Diaspora in Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and the Americas

Understanding

To export the beauty of music from people of African descent into other communities, and encourage dialogue and understanding between Black and underserved youth and other communities

Representation

To inspire Black and underserved youth to begin and stay connected to instrumental music by introducing them at an early age to music created by people that look like them, and/or to sounds that speak to them

Diversity

To expand the racial and ethnic diversity of the audience and players of instrumental music by using and developing a variety of new musical experiences
